Opening Up an Older Home for Modern Family Life

Oak and Ocean Building has officially handed over this renovation on the Northern NSW coastal border - transforming a standard 1980s home into a more open, functional and connected family space.

The home before

The original home was a standard 1980s build, with enclosed, separated rooms and limited flow between the main living areas. It had good bones, but the layout no longer suited the way the family wanted to live - especially with kids and working from home. The home wasn't broken. It just no longer fit the way this family needed it to work.

The transformation

The goal was to open the home up and create a layout that felt more practical, comfortable and connected. That meant reworking the main living areas, opening up the floor plan, and completely redoing the kitchen - which became a key part of the transformation and the true centrepiece of the finished home.

The home was gutted and modernised throughout, but with care taken to keep it feeling warm and comfortable rather than stripped back. Natural light, texture and warm finishes carry through the main living spaces, giving the whole renovation a coastal farmhouse feel.

The result

The finished result is a coastal farmhouse-inspired home that feels open, comfortable and genuinely suited to family life. This wasn't just about modernising the finishes - it was about creating a home that feels more open, connected and functional for the way the family lives now.
